To be exact it’s been 51 years since the first Culligan swimming pool!

Our prototype to this range was Hydro-Cleer 202 (the first pencil drawn design of its prototype is shown here), followed by the 314 range with overlapping pumps. Back then the model looked like more like something from outer space than a swimming pool filter.

However it was compact and functioned extremely well, and soon became the standard in swimming pools in Italy. (Photo on the right)

At the same time four designs of swimming pool shapes were created by the company, sold in a package with the new Culligan filtration system.

These were the Coral, with the shape of a bean, the Ruby, an asymmetric 8, the Topaz which was elliptical and the Sapphire which was an Olympic pool.
Our timing was perfect as this was the start of the widespread construction or refurbishment of council and Olympic swimming pools across the whole country (years of great boom for Italy which, with regards to swimming pools, still continues).
Culligan continued to introduce new designs and technologies making larger and more complex systems and swimming pools and we were the first to perfect the self cleaning diatomaceous earth filter, including models which could work with seawater. During this time Culligan became the market leader in swimming pools all across Italian Riviera’s.

We introduced the magazine “Acqua, Eau, Agua” (which began its publication in the ’60s). It was more than an in-house magazine, it was a magazine, the first of its kind in Italy, dedicated to the world of water from the social, technical, ecological, energy, natural and human wellbeing point of view, including swimming pools. In fact, on a biannual basis this publication was distributed free of charge to authorities, public authorities, designers, industries, schools, and technicians.

Dolphin pools

Swimming pools are not only important for people, but also for animals. In dolphin pools there are many different types of tank to hold our dolphin friends − from exhibition tanks, training and sanitary tanks to the ones used for the care of sick animals. Every type of tank needs a different treatment and the water needs to be recirculated at different times − water which is used for fish, cetacea (whales, dolphins and porpoises) and animals in general must be of the highest quality, minutely adjusted to the needs of the animals, and often almost completely without any chemical products.
We are very experienced in this very specialised area, and we have created dolphin pools for large water parks around the world.
